The important thing is the attachment system
A sling needs to be correctly matched to the type of attachment on the hoist.
Metal Hook / “Coat Hanger” Style Hoists
Use a sling with webbing lifting loops that attach securely to the lifting hooks.Tilt Frame Hoists
These use mushroom-shaped lugs and require a sling fitted with Keyhole Plates that securely click onto the lugs.Stand-Up Hoists
These require the appropriate type of stand-up sling designed for the particular hoist and its attachment system.
Does the sling have to be the same brand as the hoist?
Not necessarily.
Pelican's experience is that properly designed slings can be used safely with a variety of hoists, provided the sling has the correct attachment system for the hoist and is suitable for the patient and application.
The current Australian Standards referenced in our document do not state that a sling must always be made by the same manufacturer as the hoist. The document also discusses the distinction between Australian Standards and requirements that are actually established by government or the TGA.
Why does this matter?
Having the ability to select from different sling manufacturers can be important because:
A particular sling may provide a better fit or greater comfort for a patient.
Healthcare facilities may have multiple brands of hoists.
A suitable sling may be available even when the matching hoist manufacturer's sling is unavailable or being laundered.
Specially designed or custom-made slings may be required for individual patients.
Having more than one sling supplier can provide greater choice and potentially reduce replacement costs.
Most importantly – use the correct attachment
The key safety consideration is making sure the sling attachment is designed for, and correctly fitted to, the hoist.
