  • Modes of ventilation – Volume-controlled, pressure-controlled, assisted or partial and controlled or total.
  • Programmable respiratory parameters – Parameters that must be configured include tidal volume, peak pressure, respiratory frequency, PEEP and inhalation/exhalation ratio.
  • Patient group that will use the device – neonatal, pediatric or adult.
  • Display features – Graphic display must include waveforms, loops and respiratory maneuvers .
  • Connectivity – Compatibility with patient self-management system, hospital information system and other ICU devices.
  • Safety alarms – Auditory and visual alarms for tidal volume, respiratory frequency, peak pressure, apnea, FiO2, loss of gas supply and power failure.
  • Battery backup – Needed in the event of a power failure and when transporting patients.
  • Other features to consider – Heated humidifiers, ease of cleaning and cost of accessories and consumables including breathing circuits, flow sensors, expiratory valve sets, filters to protect patients against particulates and gas exchange monitor.
